Keeping up with delivery demand
Nobody was prepared for a global pandemic, and as cities across the world locked down to slow the spread of COVID-19, we were hit with unexpected interruptions to our day-to-day lives. Therefore, we had to adapt and make changes to the way we work and live. As a result, supply chains world-wide experienced huge shifts as people made changes to how they shop. Instead of going into retail stores, consumers are picking up their tablets and phones and making their purchases online. According to Stats Canada, the pandemic accelerated existing e-commerce trends with the amount of retail e-commerce sales increasing from 3.8% in April 2019 to a record high of 11.4% in April 2020. Affects on Delivery Services With that jump, we experienced an increase in the demand for delivery and consequently, delivery turnaround time. So, with customers becoming savvier and less patient, businesses find themselves needing to shift gears to keep up with demand. Is the answer as simple as, increase the number of trucks in your delivery fleet and hire more drivers? But, not all businesses can adapt in the same way. Meaning, adding the extra cost of purchasing a truck and also adding to your payroll may […]
DPF Cleaning
Are you familiar with DPF cleaning? Since 2007, diesel particulate filters (DPF) have been an essential part of your truck’s emissions system. DPF’s capture about 90% of diesel particles and soot and prevents them from being released through the exhaust system. Reasons to keep your DPF Clean As your DPF collects harmful particles, the filters inevitably begin to get clogged. Causing issues such as: Reduced fuel economy Engine damage and reduced power Increased need for replacement filters Decreased truck re-sale value Therefore, it is important to not let this maintenance slip under your radar. How often to clean your DPF This can depend on your truck and oil type. Although your unit may have a DPF status dash light to alert you when it is time to regenerate, it is recommended to pay attention to any other warning signs to stay proactive on maintenance. For example, if your truck is doing mainly “stop-and-go” driving, you may need your DPF cleaned more often. If you are unsure of whether your DPF is in need of cleaning, contact your local Metro Truck service department. How to clean your DPF DPF cleaning includes heat, compressed air and a combination of the two. This […]
Winter Driving Tips
As the winter weather approaches and temperatures start to drop, it is important to anticipate challenging driving conditions. Whether you are a new driver or a seasoned driver, here are some tips to help keep you safe on the roads this season: 1. Inspect your truck Ensure your vehicle is in proper condition by checking your battery, tire pressure/condition, keep your fuel levels above half a tank. Stay topped up on antifreeze, and consider using a fuel conditioner to help prevent diesel from gelling in the dropping temperatures. Clear your truck and trailer of all snow and ice, and let your truck warm up before heading out on the road. BONUS TIP: Keep up on your trucks maintenance schedule, and bring any concerns you may have to your mechanics attention. 2. Plan your route Before starting your trip, take a minute to plan out your route. Look ahead to any posted weather statements, such as poor visibility, icy conditions etc. Flag all truck stops along your route, so if the need to pull off the road arises – your already prepared with a plan. BONUS TIP: Share your route with a colleague, friend or family member. 3. Slow down Reducing […]
